Skin Care

People who suffer from chronic diabetes must be shown special care not only for the body but also for feet. Normally diabetes damages the nerve ends and blood vessels of feet. This condition if continuing for a long period may ultimately result in foot and skin problems, like dry skin, scaly skin etc. If sugar level exceeds certain extent, it causes serious foot disorders. Later this destructs the sweat glands paving way for further complications. A common cause for diabetes, "Peripheral Neuropathy" ultimately depreciates foot sensation affecting the mechanical structure of feet.

Corns and Callus

Corns or callus are compact layer of skin that occurs due to rubbing or friction on a particular point of the foot. This can be commonly located on the upper surface of the little toe or sometimes in between the toes. Ignoring corns and callus at initial stage may lead to serious complications.

Preventions

  • In order to overcome corns and callus, first of all you have to avoid sources of friction.
  • Prefer shoes with wide toe box that can provide plenty of room for the toes to move freely.
  • Wear loose cushioned shoes that are soft on your skin .
  • Proper foot hygiene should be followed using emollients like creams, lotions etc to moisturize your skin.
  • Orthopedic and therapeutic shoes are ideal in safeguarding and pampering the feet.

Blisters

Blisters are caused due to shoes that rub repeatedly on the same spot of the foot causing friction burns. This foot disorder is mostly found in athletes and hikers. Under blisters, the skin gets irritated, fluid gathers beneath the outer layer of skin which might be very painful.

Prevention

  • Acrylic socks work ideally in eliminating blisters.
  • Silk under socks can also be preferred as they cause less damage to the skin.
  • Apply baby powder on your feet to safeguard it from causing blisters.
  • Mole skin pad can be considered as the perfect preventive measure to overcome blister. It also relieves pain, if blister are already formed.

Bunion

Bunion is a bony prominence at the big toe joint, where the big toe slants towards the small toe. Tight fitting shoes that push the toes inward lead to bunions. Due to this the bony joint moves outward with the pressure exerted on it. Pointed or high-heeled shoes are mostly responsible in causing bunions. People find difficult to walk in any shoe, once the bunion is formed.

Prevention

  • Use orthotics as inserts for the shoes to overcome bunions.
  • Always prefer a roomier constructed shoe that enables free movement of the toes.
  • There are some specially engineered bunion pads that minimize stress and rubbing inside the shoe.

Plantar Warts

The hyperkeratotic lesions on the plantar surface are called "Plantar Warts". In other words it is referred as painful wart occurring at the sole of the foot.

Prevention

  • Warts should always be covered from getting exposed, and thongs sandals are the best key product to wrap the warts safely.
  • Prefer specially engineered orthotics that can be easily inserted in the shoe, to balance irregular foot functioning, and comfort the painful areas of the foot.

Athlete's Foot

A fungal infection that leads to redness and cracking of skin commonly found in between the toe of the people suffering from diabetes is considered as ‘Athlete's foot'. It gradually spreads to the bottom of the feet. A common cause for athlete's foot is the moist condition of the feet due to sweating or closed footwear.
