Risk Entities and Causes for Heel Pain

Generally, heel pain is caused due to some foot tissue misalignments also by the feet structure which slightly changes from its normal position.

  • Standing in one leg continuously in a particular place for a long time results in heel pain.
  • Running/jumping on various terrains with hard surface, skiddy fields lead to heel pain.
  • Difficulty in the calf muscles and few problems like tight hamstring develops serious heel pain.
  • Persons with low or high arched feet suffers a lot due to pronation. This pronation makes the feet to roll inwards causing heel pain.
  • Tender/swelling initiated in the Plantar Fascia.
  • Some abnormalities occured during gait cycle creates injury and irritation of the parts of heel bone, which results in deep-rooted heel pain.
  • In certain cases, tension and strain formed in the muscular tissue stretches a part of bone away from the calcaneous bone causing heel spur.
  • A fracture in the heel bone or if there is a change in size/scraping of calcaneous lead to heel ache.
  • Gout

  • Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid Arthritis creates sever inflammation/swellings of the joints, tissues and also organs in the body.

  • Sciatica:

Heel pain formed at the moment of the running of sciatic nerve from the hip down through the log due to entrapment on pinching of sciatic nerve.

  • Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome:

Extreme pressure created in the Tarsal Tunnel results in ankle pain and injury in tibial nerve.

  • Calcenal Apophysitis:

A severe heel pain is caused by some frustration disturbance at the point where the back of heel bone and strong achilles tissue are adjoined. This is often known as sever's disease (or) calcenal apophysitis, because of the inflammation at the growth center of heel bone/calceneus. The disease is commonly found in individuals of age between 9 and 14 who indulge in athletic activities like baseball, tennis, basketball etc. This type of heel pain focuses young generation affecting their growth. Hence, the pain at bottom of heel should be diagonized carefully to avoid serious problems in the future.

  • Reiter's syndrome:

A kind of Arthritis which initiates ache, swelling and tenderness of heel and sole of the foot.

  • Bursa:

Bursa is a fluid filled sac, which reduces frictional forces between two surfaces that move in various directions. A slight distortion in bursa results in heel pain.

Causes of Heel Pain-Footwear:

  • Heel pain is caused using footwear that lack sufficient arch support and natural foot motion.
  • If you change your footwear often, that is replacing from high heels to flats or boots etc may cause ache on the heel.
  • When the heel counters of shoes are not fitting perfectly, it may develop heel pain after sometime.
  • Anatomical design of sole plays a major role to avoid injuries. Sole with flat contour design will not fit snugly causing foot problems. This may lead to heel pain, joint pain etc.
  • Rigid type of sole restricts natural foot movements, which creates pain and irritation.
  • Roomy toebox is preferable in athletic shoes as there must be space for the toes to move easily. A tight toe box make the toes to get squeezed and by the overlapping of toes, several toe disorders are possible leading to remedy less foot problems.

The sole of the shoe must be flexible to accommodate different type of foot. It should, not be too flexible, as it causes blisters. Therefore, it must be stretchable to some extent for providing good fit and foot comfort.
