Dry skin, in otherwords named as ‘Xerosis' by medical experts, develops when the outer layer of the skin loses its moisture. The external cells do not form a good boundary and lead to cracks, rough look, flaking and itching. In addition to this, if it is left untreated, there may be a chance of reinforcing fungal infection. Further this may also lead to arise heel fissures, and athlete's foot.
Extreme dry skin can be recognized by the chapping of skin. This sort of skin condition will be more severe in extreme temperatures. So, proper care should be taken to get relief from dry skin or else it may further lead to harmful consequences.
Causes of Dry Skin
There are several causes that lead to the formation of dry skin. When the oil glands in the body fail to provide perfect lubrication to the skin, dehydration of skin occurs making the skin dry.
- Generally the skin tends to get dry with the low humidity in winter.
- Excess intake of caffeine and alcohol leads to dry skin.
- Deficiency of nutrients, especially vitamin A and D ultimately tends to form dry skin.
- Skin disorders like dermatitis, psoriasis, eczema also contribute to dry skin.
- Sometimes dry skin forms due to some drugs like diuretics, antihistamines, and isotretinoin.
- Having bath with hot water is also a cause for dry skin.
- Using harsh soaps, takes away the natural oil in your body that protects the skin texture, leading to the dryness of skin.
